1. I am aware my communication patterns are

often guarded or painful, when necessary may be distant or hostile

Rigid with no room for flexibility and each member's role is expected to be predictable at all times.

Flexible allowing each family member the option to take responsibility for meeting the needs of other family members as different situations occur.

5. In the family I grew up in, I learned

expectations are unrealistic and expressed through indirect or comparative methods

expectations are that family members are unable to be responsible for themselves in most situations and have to be controlled by the adult in charge

expectations are that each person can be mostly responsible for themselves except in situations where others may judge the family based on the individuals behaviors and actions

realistic expectations are made of each person as they are seen as imperfect and human

6. My feelings are expressed by

rarely sharing feelings and closing off to experiencing life in the moment

sharing only the feelings I think the other person wants to hear and keeping the rest bottled up inside

sharing genuine feelings at a surface level without letting another person get too close

most of the time being descriptive and clear about how I am experiencing myself in the moment .

7. I grieved various losses while healing, such as

loss of close relationship with the nonabusive parent/adult

loss of being able to form close relationships with friends, spouse, relationship partner, or my children

loss of key shared life experiences as an adult with the abusive parent/adult

loss of a healthy relationship with the abusive parent/adult

8. My boundaries in relationships are

walled off to protect me from further emotional pain

totally open to all input and I feel totally defenseless to stop any input

allow for some input with give-and-take as long as I feel safe, and blocked in areas I want to avoid experiencing emotional pain

mostly allow for healthy, positive input and protected from unhealthy, harmful input

9. My thoughts are

bouncing back and forth from one end of the continuum to the other without being able to focus on any balance

sometimes able to be balanced to avoid being caught in either/or thinking

my thoughts are balanced much of the time and I'm able to bring them back in balance if I get caught in black and white thinking

mostly balanced and clear to allow for healthy communication with equal give-and-take

10. I transform my soul and re-create my life by journaling
